History of the SDCA

Construction of the Southern Door Community Auditorium began in 1991 following the approval of a referendum seeking to remodel and provide additions to Southern Door High School. The facility was financed by the public through the referendum and individual contributions. The Southern Door Community Auditorium opened its doors in 1992 as a 592-seat theater and provided a beautiful setting for the high school’s musical production, concerts, and 5th Grade musical.
During that time, the auditorium has greeted visitors, students and performers from all across the United States. Educational programming, a variety of music talents, community and school musical productions, band and choral concerts and workshops have utilized the state-of-the-art facility. Countless community groups have rented the facility and further diversified the spectrum of programming supported by the SDCA.
Throughout the years, an astounding number of volunteers and businesses have supported the Southern Door Community Auditorium in a myriad of ways. Business sponsorship of programs have given us the funding to provide events. Individuals, families, and groups have donated their time and talent by volunteering as an usher, box office attendant, production painter/construction, and so on. These groups are the life, blood, and soul of the facility. Without their unyielding support, we could not be where we are today.
As the Southern Door Community Auditorium closes in on its 20th anniversary, we are celebrating our past but looking forward to the future. Our mission, to help educate students and provide culturally enriching programming, serves as our guiding principle. We not only look to providing quality entertainment to the Door and Kewaunee County area but also to unlocking the magic that only art can bring. We will also place an added emphasis on outreach programs which include workshops and developmental programming for students and adults alike.
Once again, words cannot express the appreciation that go out to the volunteers who have given selflessly and the visitors who have enjoyed performances over the last 20 years. We look forward to another 20 unforgettable years and hope that you are able to join us!
